In 2015, the Minister of Environment and Forestry (LHK) issued Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia Number P.32/Menlhk-Setjen/2015 concerning Customary Forests (Permen LHK 32/2015), as a follow-up to Constitutional Court Decision 35/2012. The issuance of Permen LHK 32/2015 aims to provide recognition and protection for indigenous communities in managing their forests sustainably through the designation of customary forest status. So far, 35 communities have had their customary forests designated.

In May 2019, Permen LHK 32/2015 was replaced by Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia Number P.21/MENLHK/SETJEN/KUM.1/4/2019 concerning Customary Forests and Forest Rights (Permen LHK 21/2019).
