Beginning of the Recognition of the Territory and Indigenous Community of Kasepuhan Banten Kidul

The commitment of the regional government and the Lebak legislature to recognise the united customary peoples of Banten Kidul (Sabaki) and their customary region began with a hearing on the 24th of October 2014 at Pendopo Room in Lebak legislature office, Rangkasbitung. This hearing between the Banten Kidul customary peoples and the local government of Lebak discussed the expedition of the regional law (Perda) to recognise the united customary peoples of Banten Kidul (Sabaki) and their customary region. The Vice Regent of Lebak, the Head of the Lebak Parliament, the Head of Legislation Department of Lebak Legislature and their staff joined in the hearing. Additionally, the partners of Sabaki formed civil society groups; including Komnas HAM, RMI, Perkumpulan HuMa, Epistema Institute, and JKPP. In that meeting, the Head of Lebak Parliament promised that from Tuesday, the 28th of October 2014, he would discuss the legislative drafting of the regional law to recognize the Kasepuhan customary peoples and their area, and introduce this draft as a regional legislative priority (Prolegda) in 2015. This hearing resulted in the signing of the memorandum of understanding and commitment with the local government of Lebak, local legislature of Lebak, customary peoples of Kasepuhan, and the Civil Society organizations. The statements are; The Regional Law of Kasepuhan will be part of the Legislative program in Lebak Regency in 2015.
