Being a Good Facilitator

The philosophy of “Everyone is a Teacher, Every Place is a School” has become the basis of thinking for all components of the Field School training. Field School provides participants with experiences to learn and produce knowledge from their own experiences, not from memorizing theories, rules, and formulations made by others. Facilitators and participants must perceive that each participant already has knowledge and experience, or is “not empty,” when attending the training. Field School training only serves as a tool to construct the knowledge they already have, as well as to engage in dialogue with other training participants.

To encourage participants to practice thinking about something, discuss together, and help participants find conclusions or answers, a facilitator is needed. Being a facilitator, one should master various ways or methods of discussing a subject. The method of delivery functions instrumentally, as a tool, but the use of the right method will help participants achieve the learning objectives. The more diverse facilitation skills mastered, the better a facilitator will be in facilitating, and it will influence participants’ ability to understand and grasp the substance of each session.

Through this session, we will together learn about 3 (three) main things, which are:

  1. Understanding the basic principles of facilitation;
  2. Knowing the steps and attitudes as well as behaviors as a Facilitator; and
  3. Understanding techniques in facilitating a learning process.

What is Facilitation or a Facilitator?

Each of these four terms has its own characteristics. Here are the typical characteristics of each:

So, a Facilitator is NOT someone who delivers material or news sources. A facilitator is someone who mediates between fellow participants to collectively formulate a narrative/concept.
