Call for People’s Solidarity Action for Haze Victims: Evacuation of Toddlers and Other Vulnerable Groups

Today (22/10), another toddler has passed away due to the smoke. There are 370,000 children and adults suffering from acute respiratory infections (ISPA). The number will continue to rise as the fires on peatlands burned by plantation and forestry companies have not been successfully extinguished. Many experts estimate that the fires can only be put out by three consecutive days of heavy rain. However, signs of rainfall decrease are still not visible, and it is even predicted that the dry season will persist.

What will happen to the fate of 43 million citizens directly exposed to the smoke from land and forest fires? Can they survive? Some affected areas have already called for immediate evacuation of toddlers and other vulnerable groups from the affected areas.

Real actions are needed: EVACUATION OF TODDLERS AND OTHER VULNERABLE VICTIMS OF THE SMOKE. The state surely cannot do it alone. A joint effort is needed to save the future generations of the nation by:

  1. Invite family members, relatives, and friends who are affected and have toddlers to temporarily evacuate to our homes far from the smoke attacks. Or contact us to get information about safe places.
  2. Invite family, friends, and neighbors free from smoke attacks, willing to accommodate smoke-affected toddlers temporarily in their homes until the rainy season arrives. Or contact us to register places ready to help.
  3. Urge the Government to mobilize all capabilities for the safety of the people, including providing temporary shelters and air purifiers so that ISPA sufferers can be prevented.
  4. Urge the Central and Regional Governments, especially the Ministry of Social Affairs, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), to assist in the evacuation process.
  5. Urge provincial and district/city governments to increase local evacuation centers, with adequate air cleaning systems, especially for evacuating other vulnerable groups.
  6. Pray for rain to come soon and for the fires to be extinguished.

May Allah SWT bless this effort and may the Government truly take action against companies involved in burning.
